Built in 1864 to connect Pasir Panjang Road and River Valley Road, Alexandra Road was named after Queen Alexandra (1844-1925), consort to King Edward VII. Alexandra Road's industrial background arose from SIT's designation of the area for industrial development. By the mid-1950s, industries such as Diethelm and Singapore Steam Laundry lined the road, engaged in businesses like the manufacturing of hats, shoes, ice, aluminium processing, vehicle assembly and printing etc. Today, the legacy can still be seen in the numerous factories found here.
