The National Theatre was built as a cultural symbol to commemorate the attainment of Singapore’s self-government in 1959. Officially opened on 8 August 1963, it was fondly known as the “People’s Theatre” in recognition of contributions made by Singaporeans from all walks of life.
It was an important landmark signifying a spirit of self help and nationhood in the early days of national building.
The design was inspired by the old travelling street opera. The auditorium opened to the sky, signifying the freedom and unity of the nation. Its fountain was shaped like a crescent moon, representative of the same motif on the Singapore Flag.
The National Theatre was demolished in 1986 due to structural reasons
