Jurong West Neigbourhood Park surrounded by HDB flats
The Jurong-Kranji Line marks an arbitrary line running down from Kranji River to Jurong River. This was the defence's bulwark against Japanese advance down to the city from the west. The Line was defended by the 44th Indian Infantry Brigade which covered milestone 12 on Jurong Road, the 12th Indian Infantry Brigade and the reinforced 22nd Australian Brigade which guarded the northern part of the Line and maintained contact with the 44th Indian Infantry Brigade. The 15th Indian Infantry Brigade was re-positioned near Bukit Timah Road to protect the island's vital food and petrol supplies.
The sanctity of the city's defence led Lieutenant General Percival to make preparations for a last desperate stand. He drew a defence perimeter covering Kallang aerodrome, MacRitchie and Peirce reservoirs and the Bukit Timah supply depot area. The protection of this area was issued as a secret instruction to his generals. However, his plans were misunderstood. At the Jurong-Kranji Line, Brigadier Taylor proceeded with an immediate withdrawal to the defence perimeter positions. A series of related withdrawals followed. By 11 February 1942, the Jurong-Kranji Defence Line was left undefended.
