Built in 1886, Ord Bridge connected Magazine Road with River Valley Road and was named after Colonel Sir Harry George Ord. Ord was the first Governor of the Straits Settlements (1867-1873), after it was conferred Crown Colony status. This meant that the Straits Settlements Administration, instead of the British Administration in India, was given the right to make its own laws.
There was previously a foot bridge at this site called ABC Bridge or Ordnance Bridge, as it was the landing point for weapons and ammunition which were stored at Magazine Road.
Across the bridge, stands one of the oldest Chinese temples in Singapore, the Tan Si Chong Su (Po Chiak Keng) Temple which was built in 1876. The temple is a gazetted National Monument.
