The remains of an 1860 fort wall that used to circle the summit of the hill. The exterior wall was made of granite and the interior of bricks, with an earthen fill to absorb the shocks of cannon balls. The fort served two goals. First, it was to defend Singapore against possible sea attacks, and next, to protect the European community from any local disturbances, such as the Indian Mutiny of 1857. The wall was surrounded by a moat which was no longer in existence. The Gate and the adjoining wall are all that remains of the fortress which once occupied this hill from 1861 to 1926 before it was demolished to make way for the reservoir.
