National Archives of Singapore

Formerly the Anglo-Chinese Primary School (ACPS), the National Archives of Singapore was relocated to this site in 1997.

This building currently houses the National Archives of Singapore. It was formerly the Anglo-Chinese Primary School from 1886 to 1993. The site was given by the colonial government to the Methodist mission in the early 1880s for construction of the first Methodist church. The foundation stone of the Anglo-Chinese Primary School was laid by Governor Sir Cecil Clementi Smith in 1892. The school opened the following year. Further extensions were completed in 1895, 1911 and 1959. In 1993, the school moved to Cairnhill Road.

The National Archives of Singapore was established in 1968 in the National Library and moved to Lewin Terrace in Fort Canning later that year. It then moved to the Old Hill Street Police Station in 1980 and to this building in 1997.

The National Archives of Singapore is the official custodian of Singapore’s individual and public records, including oral history. The vast richness of Singapore’s documented heritage is made accessible to all, thus facilitating the research and dissemination of information on the history of Singapore.
