Kampong Kapor Methodist Church, also known as “The Straits Chinese Methodist Church” dates back to 1890. Then, a group of about 25 Straits Chinese men and women met at Miss Sophia Blackmore’s home where a Malay language service started. Miss Blackmore was the first female missionary in Singapore.
From 1894, the Methodist community met at the Middle Road Christian Institute, which was shared with the Methodist Girls’ School until 1900.
The church soon outgrew the Middle Road premises and a new one was built in the Art Deco style between 1929-1930. It was built with the generous donation of US$50,000 from the family and friends of the late Bishop Bickley. The church was renamed the Kampong Kapor Methodist Church in 1957.
