"Chap He Diam"

Hokkiens call these sundry shops "chap he diam", which literally means shops selling a mix of goods. Thin Huat, which owner Mr. Ang, 53, calls a typical "Ah Gong Dian" (Mandarin: Grandfather shop) has been selling goods such as spices, rice and biscuits by the weight since Mr. Ang's father opened shop in 1960. Kian Seng is another such shop selling groceries and religious paraphernalia. With the opening of supermarkets in Queenstown, business for such sundry shops has steadily declined, with some closing for good in recent years.
