Kallang Reclamation Project
The Kallang Basin was a 1,000 acre land which mostly lay below the high tide line, dotted with sawmills, vegetable farms, fishermen's huts, even rubber trees, a gas-works and a coal and petroleum station.
In the 1960s, Ming dynasty porcelain was dredged up from the basin. It is conjectured that the Kallang Basin and Tanjong Rhu areas were already home to many locals and Bugis sailors and traders.
The basin was largely a swampland with squatter housing up till 1965 when the Housing Development Board (HDB) resettled the squatters. HDB reclaimed the area and converted it into a modern and clean housing estate and at the same time helped to solve the nation's housing crisis.
Today, the Kallang Basin area has been earmarked for high density water-front housing developments with landscaped banks and park connectors.
