Situated at the side of the Kallang River, it is known in the Chinese Hokkien dialect as Chwee Kang Beo, or Shui Jiang Miao in Mandarin. The main deity of the temple was originally the Tua Pek Kong (Grand Old Man) who is believed to be the guardian saint of overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia.
However, the Cheng Huang deity is also equally famous and has been in the temple for more than 40 years. Legend has it that the Stone Lion Cheng Huang (City God) in Chwee Kang Beo came to the temple in 1965. In the temple, there was also the Horse General and the Tiger God. Next to the Tiger God's cave, there is a boat which is unique to this temple by the river. The boat is built of teak and is a scaled-replica of a Ming-dynasty era vessel, complete with a keel, canvas sails, rigging and even miniature ladders in the cargo hold! It was built by a devotee who once used to build and repair boats in the area and it took him about two months to complete this miniature boat.
