161 Lavender Street

This Urban Redevelopment Authority Architectural Heritage Awards (AHA) winner for excellence in building restoration is a graceful Art Deco style shophouse with beautiful tiled facade and a new four-storey extension at the rear.

Art Deco was a style in architecture that developed in the 1920s to 1930s in Europe and the United States. The distinguishing features of the style are simple, clean shapes, often with a streamlined look. Look out for more examples of Art Deco buildings along Cavan and Hamilton Roads.

Originally the premises of the Lee Rubber Company, this building was owned by the famous philanthropist Lee Kong Chian who was a supporter of Dr Sun Yat Sen's Nationalist cause. Try to spot the life-like plaster figures of soldiers carrying the Nationalist Flag of the Republic of China on the pediment of the building.
