The Elgin Bridge was named after Lord Elgin. Lord James Bruce Elgin, the eighth Earl of Elgin, served as the Governor-General of India from 1862 to 1863. He was in Singapore on his way to China when news of the Indian mutiny broke out in 1857. From Singapore, he dispatched a shipload of troops to save the British Empire.
