Lord Dalhousie

The Marquis of Dalhousie was the Governor General of India from 1848 to 1856. Dalhousie Lane is named after him. Dalhousie visited Singapore twice. The Dalhousie memorial obelisk was built to commemorate his second visit to Singapore in 1850. The memorial was erected to remind succeeding merchants of the benefits of free trade.
